The Institute has received with gratitude book donations from Dr. Kariuki Muigwa which he has authored. Dr. Muigwa teaches one of the Msc. program course units (Environmental Law and Peace Policies). The books include; 1. Resolving Conflicts through Mediation in Kenya (2017), 2. Alternative Dispute Resolution and Access to Justice in Kenya (2015), 3. Settling Disputes through Arbitration in Kenya (2017), 4. Natural Resources and Environmental Justice in Kenya (co-authored with D. Wamukoya and F. Kariuki, 2015).

The Wangari Maathai Institute (WMI) hosted a mediation training workshop from February 10, 2020 to February 14, 2020. The event was conducted at the Wangari Maathai Peace Laboratory and involved representatives from Kenya Forest Service, Kenya Forest Research Institute and members of the Ngong Hills Forest Community Forest Association.

Applications are invited for admission to Integrated Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Audit (EIA&EA) course at the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies (WMI). Course duration is three (3) weeks, from March 9, 2020 to March 27, 2020.

Eligibility: Holders of at least a first degree or equivalent (related to Natural Resource Management) from a recognized Institution.

The Wangari Maathai Institute (WMI) hosted a seminar which featured screening of a documentary dubbed “Thank You for the Rain” by Mr. Kisilu Musya and Julia Dahr. Kisilu Musya is a farmer from Kitui county while Julia Dahr is a Norwegian filmmaker.

The joint meeting between WMI and EIK was held at the Wangari Maathai Institute campus on January 23, 2020. The aim of the meeting was to plan for the upcoming training of environment professionals to be held in March, 2020. This follows the signing of the MoU between the two institutions on July 24, 2019 which formalized the partnership and joint efforts in providing practical solutions to environmental issues.

Mercy Ndalila, PhD student, University of Tasmania – Australia, delivered a seminar on the ongoing Australian fires and lessons for Kenya on preparedness and Adaptation on January 22, 2020 at the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies (WMI).

The UoN Vice Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Kiama chaired a meeting at the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies (WMI) on Tuesday 14 January, 2020. He was meeting a high-powered delegation from Trent University (Canada). This follows a visit to the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences last year by the Vice Chancellor of Trent University. The purpose of the visit was to explore potential areas of collaboration between the two Universities. The Canadian delegation was led by Prof. Neil Emery (Vice-President Research and Innovation).

Thirteen Students from Linnankoski Upper Secondary School (Porvoo, Finland), accompanied by three teachers and Prof. Petri Pellica, visited the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies on January 10, 2020. They wanted to learn about climate change in Kenya, its causes and impacts on migration, food security and health.

The Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies (WMI) received a strong delegation from the University of West Indies led by Prof. Eudine Barriteau, Pro Vice-Chancellor, University of West Indies, Barbados on January 9, 2020. The delegation was accompanied by senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education and the Dirctor, Corporate Affairs, University of Nairobi. They had come to the Institute to explore areas of Research and Education collaboration.

In this role, Wanjira will be responsible for the design and implementation of World Resources Institute’s Africa overall strategy. She will lead WRI’s growing portfolio across the continent, building on projects and initiatives in over 20 countries.
