Restoring Kenya's Landscapes, One Tree at a Time

Across Kenya, degraded land is getting a second chance. Through the Landscape Repair and Transformation (LANSRET) initiative, the University of Nairobi's Wangari Maathai Institute (WMI) is partnering with Hearts of Green and a growing circle of corporate allies, including Pioneer Insurance, VIVA 365, Kanisa SACCO, and Platinum Credit, to turn barren stretches of land into thriving green spaces.

The Landscape Repair and Transformation (LANSRET) initiative, a partnership between the University of Nairobi's Wangari Maathai Institute (WMI) and Hearts of Green, showcased its landscape restoration model during the 2026 Nairobi Innovation Week. The exhibition demonstrated how research, technology and community partnerships are transforming degraded ecosystems across Kenya.

Students from the Sustainable Land Use and Natural Resource Management Programme (SLUSE) interdisciplinary field course held a community feedback session at Othaya Community Hall to share insights from their recent fieldwork in Othaya, Nyeri County.

The Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies marked the 2026 Wangari Maathai Day and Africa Environment Day with a tree growing activity on 3rd March that brought together SLUSE students from WMI and the University of Copenhagen, members of the Gatugi community, and the environmental group Hearts of Green. The activity focused on a simple idea: planting trees matters, but making sure they grow matters even more. 

The Inkiito Tree Planting& Growing Success Story

The Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies is registered by NEMA as a centre for training for Integrated Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Audit (EIA &EA) as part of its activities.

Wangari Maathai Legacy Inspires Platinum Forest

The Wangari Maathai Institute, in partnership with Hearts of Green and Kanisa Sacco, led a tree-growing drive at Kenyatta University on 4th Sept 2025, under the Landscape Repair and Transformation (LANSRET) Project. The initiative saw the planting of 600 trees aimed at restoring degraded landscapes, promoting biodiversity, and combating climate change.

The event, symbolized not just an environmental act but a shared commitment to sustainability, collaboration, and legacy.
