The Landscape Repair and Transformation (LANSRET) initiative, a partnership between the University of Nairobi's Wangari Maathai Institute (WMI) and Hearts of Green, showcased its landscape restoration model during the 2026 Nairobi Innovation Week. The exhibition demonstrated how research, technology and community partnerships are transforming degraded ecosystems across Kenya.
Visitors to the LANSRET stand learned that environmental restoration is about more than planting trees. Inspired by the philosophy of Nobel Peace Laureate Prof. Wangari Maathai, the initiative promotes tree growing, ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation and community stewardship to ensure landscapes recover and thrive for generations. Digital innovations such as tree survival monitoring are also helping communities track and nurture planted trees, improving long-term restoration outcomes.
As one of the exhibitors at the University's flagship innovation event, LANSRET highlighted how science, innovation and community action can work together to build climate resilience while advancing Wangari Maathai's vision that lasting environmental change begins with people taking responsibility for the landscapes they depend on.
