ANNOUNCING THE VENUE OF THE IUFRO WORLD CONGRESS 2029

The International Council of IUFRO approved the 62nd IUFRO Board recommendations to hold the 27th IUFRO World Congress in Nairobi, Kenya.

"We are thrilled about the decision to take the IUFRO World Congress to Africa for the first time in the history of our Organization. The beautiful country of Kenya is an oasis of biodiversity, has strong forest traditions and a lively forest research community that is well-connected internationally. This makes it an attractive Congress venue in many respects," says IUFRO President Dr. John Parrotta.

Exploring Collaboration between Wyss Academy Hub East Africa and Wangari Maathai Institute

"We are delighted to announce that Wyss Academy Hub East Africa Director Dr. Benson Okita was in Nairobi on 20th November 2023, to shake hands with the University of Nairobi,  Vice-Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama Gitahi on a collaboration agreement domiciled at Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies (WMI), University of Nairobi (UoN). The handshake marks the signing of a Collaborative Framework between the two institutions that will form the basis for collaboration in such areas as Biodiversity, Water, Climate Change, Sustainability  and Environmental Governance.

Empowering Tomorrow: Youth Leading the Way in Climate Resilience

The Wangari Maathai Institute (WMI) The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) hosted the Intergenerational Dialogue during the Africa Climate Summit, where young people from 135 countries worldwide joined forces to advocate for a significant increase in adaptation finance and the active inclusion of youth in adaptation decision-making and actions. The Youth4Adaptation Community presented at this event, represented the voices of young individuals hailing from 51 African nations whose message was on the urgent need to double adaptation finance by 2025 in order to adapt successfully.

Official Launch of UoN's Wangari Maathai Institute Emphasizes Climate Action and Environmental Research

In a significant event, Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya inaugurated the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies at the University of Nairobi's Upper Kabete Campus. The institute, named after the renowned Nobel Peace Laureate Prof. Wangari Maathai, is poised to collaborate closely with the government to tackle climate change-related challenges and resource conflicts in Kenya and the wider region.
