Prof. Patrick Verkooijen, Global Center on Adaptation CEO, Welcomed as Distinguished Chair of the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies

Nairobi, Kenya, 23 September 2022 – Global Center on Adaptation CEO, Professor Patrick Verkooijen, was appointed as the Distinguished Chair of The Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies by the University of Nairobi.

WMI Welcomes Prof. Juan Manuel García-Ruiz who has been appointed as a Visiting Professor at the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies

Professor Juan Manuel García-Ruiz, is a Research Professor at the National Research Council (CSIC) at the University of Granada in Spain. Professor Garcia-Ruiz studied at the Complutense University in Madrid where he attained a Ph.D. degree in geology in 1980. Prof. Garcia-Ruiz is an internationally recognized expert in crystallography.

WMI to participate in virtual Global Peace and Development Service Alliance (GPDSA) Africa Regional Summit on 16th April, 2021

Through the Africa Regional Coordinator of the Global Peace and Development Service Alliance (GPDSA) Mr. Samuel Budoi, the Institute has been invited to participate in a virtual summit which will take place on 16th April, 2021. The theme of the summit is “Environmental Conservation and Entrepreneurship” through Youth Social Enterprise in Environment, Peace, Community and Volunteerism.

Wangari Maathai Institute conducts experiential learning activities at John Michuki Memorial Park and the Wangari Maathai Institute campus

The Wangari Maathai Institute (WMI) conducted experiential learning field activities at John Michuki Memorial Park and the Wangari Maathai Institute Campus on 18th and 19th March 2021, respectively. The second day's activities also involved visits to the Githingiti informal settlement (located in Ndumbuini), CAVS Dam and at the bridge between the Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre and WMI to observe and carry out key informant interviews regarding the extent and impact of riparian and conservation areas encroachment.

Wangari Maathai Day/Africa Environment Day Celebration - 3rd March 2021

Wangari Maathai Institute participated in this year's celebration of the Wangari Maathai Day/Africa Environment Day that was held on March 3, 2021, at the Hon. Michuki Memorial Park. The event was organized in partnership with the Green Belt Movement (GBM), under the theme "Reimagining the Future: Clean and Green Cities for All".

Wangari Maathai Institute and KEFRI, KFS held a Joint meeting to plan for the establishment of a multi-functional tree nursery at the Wangari Maathai Institute Campus

At the invitation of the Director, WMI, a team of experts from the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) and the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) led by Dr. Joram Kagombe visited the Wangari Maathai Institute on February 12, 2021 to discuss the roadmap to the establishment of a multi-functional tree nursery at the Institute.
