The Wangari Maathai Institute (WMI) welcomed four new interns on February 08, 2021. The interns are part of the Public Service Internship Programme, a government initiative aimed at offering graduates the opportunity to develop professional skills and gain work experience in the public service. During the first orientation meeting, Prof. David Mungai, Director, WMI introduced the interns to the Institute’s core functions. He encouraged the interns to take advantage of the opportunities at the Institute but also challenged them to provide support and offer solutions that will contribute towards the growth of the Institute. They will be involved in a number of activities including taking part in an environmental audit of the university focussing on solid waste management, water and energy use efficiency; the establishment of an indigenous tree nursery, recovery and reuse of plastics at the WMI; monitoring and reporting on status of planted trees in CAVS and taking part in experiential learning activities among others. The interns have first degrees in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies and Community Development and Environmental Science and Natural Resource Conservation. They expressed interest in various areas including waste management, agroforestry, Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Audit (EIA/EA), environmental health, Remote Sensing/Geographical Information Systems (GIS), and natural resource management. The interns will be at the Institute for a period of one year.

We look forward to a fruitful engagement with the new interns.
