Kenya Short-Lived Climate pollutants (SLCP) Project Webinar held on 30th July 2020

Panelists in the Kenya Short-Lived Climate pollutants (SLCP) Project Webinar on 30th July 2020

Prof. Muthama, Deputy Director, Wangari Maathai Institute, participated in Kenya Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCP) Project Webinar on 30th July 2020 as Speaker and Panelist. SLCP Project organized a one day webinar titled “Addressing vehicular pollutants and impacts on urban populations and the advantages of developing a baseline black carbon emissions inventory in Kenya" on 30th July, 2020 from 10.00 am – 12.00 Noon, East African Time/GMT. It was attended by local and international participants. Prof. Muthama delivered a presentation titled “State of vehicular emissions in Kenya”. He was among other panellists drawn from the academia, UN Environment and Industry. He stressed the importance of investing in Air Quality Management and Governance systems that ensure continuous monitoring and evaluation of air quality in Kenya.

The Kenya SLCP Project is a one-year project that aims to understand the scale and status of Short Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCPS) emissions in particular black carbon on air pollution, climate change and women’s welfare in Kenya. The project is being implemented by Joyful Women, Kenya Meteorological Society and Council of Governors and funded by ClimateWorks Foundation. This project will be implemented in Nakuru, Nairobi, Muranga, Nandi, Makueni, Kajiado, Taita Taveta and Garissa County Governments. The Project is designed with the understanding that in Kenya, women are primarily responsible for cooking and hence disproportionately exposed to health-damaging pollutants generated from the use of biomass for combustion. Secondly, vehicular emissions pose one of the most serious health and environmental problems in society today, and this is particularly more amplified in urban areas due to increased combustion Engines and large population densities.
