In this role, Wanjira will be responsible for the design and implementation of World Resources Institute’s Africa overall strategy. She will lead WRI’s growing portfolio across the continent, building on projects and initiatives in over 20 countries. She will lead WRI’s work in its regional hub in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, but will be based in Nairobi, Kenya.
Wanjira has served as the executive Chair of the Wangari Maathai Foundation (will continue now as non-executive Chair). She also led the wPower (Partnership for Women’s Entrepreneurship on Renewables) Project at the Wangari Maathai Institute and served as the Executive Director of the Greenbelt Movement International.
We at the Wangari Maathai Institute offer our heartfelt congratulations to Wanjira Maathai on this appointment. It makes us proud to see one of our Board Members get recognition from such a premier global organization whose mandate strongly complements what the late Professor Wangari Maathai worked and stood for, and the agenda that one of her legacy projects, the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies is engaged in. We look forward to working with Wanjira in her new role.
