Wangari Maathai Institute and KEFRI, KFS held a Joint meeting to plan for the establishment of a multi-functional tree nursery at the Wangari Maathai Institute Campus

At the invitation of the Director, WMI, a team of experts from the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) and the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) led by Dr. Joram Kagombe visited the Wangari Maathai Institute on February 12, 2021 to discuss the roadmap to the establishment of a multi-functional tree nursery at the Institute. The nursery and a demonstration site for tropical forestry are intended to be one of the planned experiential learning platforms for present and future generations.

Prof. David Mungai, Director, WMI noted the excellent partnership between WMI and KEFRI, where KEFRI staff are involved in supervision of students at WMI. He also noted the good working relationship with KFS. Dr. Kagombe observed that KEFRI is involved in activities geared towards environmental conservation. KEFRI’s long-term agenda includes the restoration of Nairobi river ecosystem and urban forestry. The proposed tree nursery will have not only indigenous tree seedlings, but also fruit tree seedlings high value tree seedlings and also trees for urban landscaping.
