We are pleased to inform all WMI stakeholders that the founding Director of the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies, Prof. Stephen Kiama Gitahi, has been appointed Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi for a period of five years with effect from 6th January, 2020. Prof. Kiama was the Director of the Institute from 2003 to 2016. He played a key role in the establishment of the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies through enormous skills in resource mobilization from the African Development Bank, DANIDA and other sources. He created strategic partnerships between the Institute and top global universities such as the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, the University of Tokyo and United Nations University in Japan among others. We look forward to continued support and mentorship from him. We at the WMI offer our hearty congratulations to Prof. Kiama on the appointment as the substantive Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi. We pledge our total support as he steers the University of Nairobi to greater heights.
